The initial concept for Alney was inspired by its rich historical connections to the Vikings and Romans. As the idea evolved, the focus shifted towards Viking trading and navigation which are key aspects of the culture and influences.

In this phase of development, I have been exploring a masterplan layout using elements that were either traded or used for navigation by the Vikings. These include calcite crystals, which helped determine the sun’s direction on cloudy days, as well as wool and salt, both highly valued trade commodities.
To experiment with different compositions, I have mapped these forms onto Alney’s boundary outline, testing various spatial arrangements. Individually, the shapes inspired by salt, wool, and an axe create strong contrasts of mass and void, offering an interesting interplay of forms. However, given the importance of Viking navigation, integrating celestial elements, such as stars and constellations, remains a key consideration for further development.

This ongoing process aims to blend historical significance with spatial composition, creating a masterplan that reflects Alney’s deep-rooted past while shaping its future landscape.
