This blog is an insight into my design process and interests.

Concept Layout Development

The primary goal of my site, Fylgðar, is to consciously and subconsciously reconnect Gloucester with its historical heritage through education and engagement. The space should seamlessly integrate into daily life, becoming a familiar destination for social gatherings, relaxation, special events, corporate functions, and festivals. With its large layout, it can accommodate all these activities while remaining inviting and accessible.

The design hopes to balance simplicity with sophistication, with meaningful genus loci, using carefully structured zones to cater to diverse needs and naturally guide visitors through the space. Additionally, it will support biodiversity and flood mitigation while incorporating “WOW FACTORS” yet still aligning with GCC and UN sustainability goals.

The overarching layout is inspired by a deconstructed axe design, layered with significant navigation and trade-related reference points. I have refined the initial concept to establish a clear hierarchy of spaces, forming the foundation for the master plan.

Given the site’s scale, I am still adapting my skills to the spatial dynamics, but the more I work on it, the more intuitive it becomes. While I aim to keep the design flexible and open to creative exploration, I am also considering the interplay of mass and void, envisioning sculptural landforms emerging from the ground and strategic wayfinding elements to guide visitors through the space.

I have researched similar spaces, like Tainjin Culture Park to help develop my spatial placement.
